1) Opeth - Ghost Reveries
There is no throwing Opeth off the top spot at the moment. Thier music is incredibly diverse and extremely technically accomplished. Featuring tempo and key changes, acoustinc interludes, heavy riffs and a mix of screaming and clean vocals this album has everything.

2) Children Of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet?
The technical ability of the guitarists is mind blowing in this album. CoB even seek to diversify throwing some thrash and power metal influences into the mix. They have mixing a polished melodic sound with jagged aggression down to an art form.sion.

A very risky concept album that pays off. The album incorporates an interesting storyline and a lot of variety. The band are even more melodic AND more complex this time out! They sustain an intense dark atmosphere throughout.

Exodus comeback part II. This time the band have a new singer who adds a whole new dimension to the bands sound. He is both more intense and angrier than his previous vocalists and give Exodus the kick the band never knew they needed. A welcome return to form from an amazing band.

An unusual album from and unusual band. The album is one long track which is broken up into 13 sections and everything about the album breaks new ground.

Another flexible album, Arch Enemy show off thier many sides. Angela Gossow takes the band to new heights while being one of the few female metal vocalists who can actually sing in true death metal style.

10) Symphorce - Godspeed
The only power metal band in the top 10. German band Symphorce have produced an outstanding album. Vocalist, Franck can sing at any register and the band combine power metal with progressive influences to great effect. They pull off melodic ballands and more intense songs with equal skill.
